273. Lying Awake At Night

Published on 28 July 2018 at 08:03

I sometimes lie awake at night,

swimming in a pool of endless thoughts.

The pool doesn’t have a bottom floor,

and so I’ll swim until I’m washed up on shore.

I try to cry myself to sleep sometimes,

although the nightmares keep me awake.

If only I had a dreamcatcher,

then my nightmares would run away.

Then there’s the boogeyman at the foot of my bed,

waiting to catch me once I close my eyes.

But they’re pried open by unwanted thoughts

that never seem to stay out of my head.

I just want to sleep. I need to rest.

I want it all to go away—please.

Let me close my tired eyes

and fall asleep, peacefully.
