Ordinary Flow

I swam along a Pacific highway—

not as a fish, but as a lost traveler.

I did not know where I was going,

but unlike the fish, I had to wonder.

I questioned my place in the world,

and wondered which way I should go.

There was no place for me there,

so I swam out of the ordinary flow.

I sailed forward while you sailed away,

leaving my heart dead in a suitcase.

All I saw now were unfamiliar faces

in a world filled with terrifying places.

I watched as all the trees passed me by—

but they weren’t the ones floating along.

I swam down a path I no longer knew,

and realized then that the path was wrong.

The highway holds many, many roads,

and I have traveled down quite a few,

but all I wanted was to swim alongside you,

and find ourselves out of the ordinary flow.
