Mr. Rabbit

Mr. Rabbit was stuck inside a hole,

not quite sure where else he could go.

He’d never been outside his home,

for he always feared the great unknown.

Mr. Rabbit knew he’d have to leave,

but was unsure of what he would see—

whether it might be thousands of trees,

or the hive of a billion bumbling bees.

He did not know what he would find,

whether the world would be mean or kind,

or if he would find himself dead or alive.

All Mr. Rabbit wanted was to survive.

He didn’t know, at first, what to do,

but then a thought came out of the blue:

it didn’t matter which he would choose—

Mr. Rabbit didn’t think he had much to lose.

If only Mr. Rabbit knew he was wrong,

then perhaps he would never have gone.

He’d still be waking to the melodic songs

of mourning doves, as he’d sing along.

Mr. Rabbit, as terrified as one could be,

left his hole to begin a new journey.

He did not realize that others also had to eat…

and so Mr. Rabbit quickly met the end of his story—

and it was quite a tragic story, indeed.
