Only Human

We all may live,
We all may die—
Chances are,
We may also cry.

And as we breathe,
May we also see
The pain—the flames
Of the burning man,

The desolate sand
Where we may live,
And utterly give
Our dying hearts away.

As I pray, I must say
That we are all the same:
Man, woman, adult and child,
Young and old, tamed and wild.

But to think we always fight,
To think that we just might
Even have the decency
To forgive—and to forget.

To let each other live,
Live in peace, and to remember
The burning embers
Of forgotten hope

That we once shared.
And to my utter despair,
I cared too much.
But as we all know—
Out there, somewhere,

There may be a remaining hope.
I surely know it, I truly do.
After all, we are only human.
Now—let that hope break through.
